Shop Drawings

When projects are deigned the overall concept is put together combining all the different building elements to complete the building design.  Where the different building elements are included, the exact details are not.  Shop drawings supplement working drawings. Consider them an add-on or a detailed development of construction working drawings. The idea of shop drawings is to fine tune a specific building element to the precise requirements. A shop drawing will show a lot more detail than the project construction documents for particular products without reference to other building elements except where there is direct interaction and integration. 

A detailed set of shop drawings will identify most construction issues before they arise. Clashes between different building elements can be identified and resolved before a contractor gets to site. They will provide exact measurements for any fabrication required prior to delivery to site. They will also provide exact sizes and positing for installation on site. Construction details for all joints and connection to adjoining building elements should be detailed.
